Chapter Thirteen

“Why is the toilet and sink bright blue and the walls purple?” Betsie asked a couple of hours later as she returned from the bathroom and climbed up to snuggle between them in the bed, “And why does Daddy have no blankets? Did you not want to share, Meg? Aunt Jenna says at Little Acorns that we all have to share.”

“Um,” judging by the way she grabbed for the painkillers and gulped them down, Meg’s head clearly hurt and Josh himself was not faring any better. They had managed to doze off a little before his daughter had come bouncing in, bright eyed and raring to start the day. Thank goodness it was Saturday and none of them had anywhere they needed to be. Snuggling like this though, all three of them together, was too much like a taste of what he and Betsie had missed out on, and Josh didn’t want to let his mind go there. He had had enough of a cathartic outpouring for one weekend. Best put the shutters back up and not dwell on what might have been with his late wife or what would likely never be with the lovely woman who had held him tightly as his tears soaked through her pyjamas. Besides, the last thing he wanted was to confuse Betsie – he was already annoyed with himself for not being back in the lounge when she awoke.

“Come on little kangaroo, let’s get you some breakfast at the café with Nana. You can show her you’re feeling much better.”

“You don’t have to leave,” Meg’s eyes pleaded with him to stay but Josh knew she needed more rest.

“It’s okay, I’ll check on you later. In the meantime, phone me straight away if you feel worse or start going downhill at all. Please, promise me you will,” he knew he sounded needy, but Josh didn’t care. Meg had given him something so precious last night when she had listened and not judged, understood and held him, that he needed to know she was okay too.

“I will, but ah, you will come back soon, won’t you?” Josh had to admit to being happy to hear his own desperation being echoed back to him, and came around to Meg’s side of the bed. Betsie had bounced out to say goodbye to Bonnie and it was just the two of them for an all-too-brief moment.

He took Meg’s hands in his as he perched on the edge of the mattress, “I will definitely see you this afternoon. I think I’ve used up all my babysitting credits though, so if you’re feeling better, why don’t the three of us go for a walk down by the harbour? We could get some fish and chips.”

“That sounds lovely,” Meg replied as he bent to kiss her gently on the forehead, deliberately avoiding her bruised bump, “thank you.”

“No, thank you,” Josh said, and they both knew what he was referring to.
